DIXFIELD – Levi Ervin rushed for 184 yards and scored four touchdowns in the first half as Lisbon cruised to a 48-0 win over Dirigo in a Class C Campbell Conference contest.
The Greyhound defense held the Cougars to minus-38 yards and didn’t allow a first down in the game. Lisbon hasn’t been scored on in two games.
The outcome could have gotten totally out of hand, but the second half was played entirely by second- and third-stringers.
“I was very pleased with the team effort,” Lisbon coach Dick Mynahan said. “Any time you can score 35 points in one half of play, it’s very good. I thought all of our kids came to play, even our reserves, and they stayed focused.”
Lisbon immediately established its running game and drove 55 yards on six plays. Ervin followed the left side of the line for a 14-yard touchdown. Chris Brunnick kicked his first of five extra points, to make it 7-0. Lisbon later scored on four straight four possessions. Ervin broke a tackle and ran in a 17-yard TD. Dan Willis sidestepped Cougar safety Derek Daley and raced untouched for an 80-yard TD.
“Offensively, we’re having trouble blocking up front,” Cougar coach Hart Daley said. “Our defense has improved, but the linebackers were overpursuing. We adjusted and made them stay at home.”
Lisbon (2-0) watched Ervin score on runs of eight and four yards, respectively. The back grabbed a Brunnick pitch out and also scored on a sweep.
Dirigo (0-2) had quarterback Spenser Berry (three-of-10, five yards) back in the shotgun in an attempt to avoid the rush. Kevin O’Leary and Josh Daley were constantly tackled behind the line of scrimmage.
Lisbon’s Nick Adams intercepted two passes.
Ryan Giusto (72 yards) and Andy Ouellette each scored in the fourth quarter.
“We are young,” Daley said.”We have a lot of juniors and sophomores playing in a senior league. But, there’s no quit in these kids and we’ll keep trying.”
