WEST PARIS – The greatest concern for the town’s selectmen today is a need to find answers regarding recent evidence of vandalism in various parts of town, they agreed last week.

According to reports from Selectman Bill Birney, the vandalism has been discovered at the soapbox racing facilities adjacent to the town office and at the former Penley’s clothespin mill now owned by Birney.

The vandalism includes wires torn from the speaker system at Derby Hill and a break-in at the snack shack.

Town Manager Donald Woodbury said he has often seen young people playing in the area lately and has tried to make it clear they should not be playing on the buildings.

“I’ve pointed at them and made it clear that they can play on Derby Hill, but they don’t need to be climbing on the announcer’s booth and other structures there,” Woodbury said.

The vandalism has been reported to police and is under investigation, selectmen said.

Selectman Wayne Theofrastou made it clear he would like to see the people involved prosecuted, which he feels would deliver a strong message that the town is not going to put up with such behavior.

As for the damage at the Penley’s Mill building, Birney said many of the building’s windows have been shot out.

Along with vandalism at Derby Hill and Penley’s Mill, Woodbury reported that diesel fuel has also been siphoned from the town grader which, if such acts continue, will cause the town a lot of extra money given today’s fuel prices.
