NEW LONDON, Conn. – Bates College rallied from a one-goal, second-half deficit to defeat Connecticut College 2-1 in the second overtime of a tightly contested NESCAC men’s soccer matchup Saturday afternoon.
Terence O’Connell tallied the game-winner on a direct kick from 25 yards out in the 107th minute of play. David Shear had tied the game with a penalty kick at the 85:27 mark for the Bobcats (2-1-1).
The Camels (2-3) took a 1-0 lead just 7:39 into the second half. Sophomore Win Robinson controlled a clearing pass and served the ball up to Matt Hula, who lofted one over the head of the goalie for the score.
Keene State 4, USM 0
GORHAM – Freshman forward Mike Cooley scored a pair of goals to lead Keene State to a 4-0 victory over University of Southern Maine.
Eric Scott scored on a penalty kick and Pelse Mesa scored on a pass from Collin Bailey for the undefeated Owls (8-0). Goalie Cal Mintz needed only three saves to pick up the shutout.
Williams 2, Bowdoin 1
BRUNSWICK – Dana Leary headed in a cross from Josh Bolton with just 11 seconds left in the game to give Williams a 2-1 win over Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears drew first blood, when Wolf Grueber headed in a corner from Anthony Regis with 34 minutes remaining. Willaims (5-1) countered 11 minutes later with an unassisted goal from Meloy Kapella to tie the game.
Colby 1, Trinity 0
WATERVILLE – Colby’s Monty Hankin scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Colby a 1-0 win over Trinity.
Colby (2-2) goalkeeper Josh Kahane was credited with 14 saves in the shutout.
Women’s soccer
UMF 0, Lasell 0
NEWTON, Ma. – Defense was the theme of the day as the University of Maine at Farmington and Lasell College played to a 0-0 tie in women’s soccer action Saturday.
The Beavers (3-2-1) outshot the Lasers (2-3-1) by a margin of 15-5, but freshman goalie Jaime Remmers came up big with 15 saves.
Bowdoin 3, Williams 0
BRUNSWICK – Grace Moore started the scoring for Bowdoin with a header off an Ann Zeigler corner at the 10:19 mark to power Bowdoin to a 3-0 triumph over Williams.
In the second half, Ivy Blackmore tapped in a pass from Katherine Whitley. Twenty minutes later Kelsey Wilcox ended the scoring with a goal on a shot just outside the box. Bowdoin (4-1) goalkeeper Anna Shapell made eight saves to earn the shutout.
USM 1, Keene State 0
KEENE, NH – Eva Hanson scored the only goal of the game in the first half unassisted to lift University of Southern Maine to a 1-0 triumph over Keene State.
Mindy Morneault made eight saves to earn the shutout for USM (6-2). Goaltender Sarah Campbell had eight stops for the Owls (5-1-2).
It was the first time the Huskies defeated Keene State since 1997.
Colby 5, Trinity 0
WATERVILLE – Katie McCabe and Laura Williamson both had a goal and an assist to pace Colby College to a 5-0 victory over Trinity.
Liza Benson made six saves for Colby for the shutout, while Tara Finucane was credited with 10 stops for Trinity (3-2).
Field hockey
Connecticut College 6, Bates 1
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior forward Sage Shanley recorded a hat trick to lead Connecticut College to a 6-1 victory over Bates College in field hockey action Saturday.
Ashley Kenerson had eight stops in net for Connecticut College.
Trinity 1, Colby 0
WATERVILLE – Teagan Henwood found the back of the net unassisted in the second half to propel Trinity to a 1-0 victory over Colby.
Trinity (3-2) played great defense the entire game holding Colby to just two shots.
Plymouth State 2, USM 1
PLYMOUTH, NH – Plymouth State University scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game and held on to defeat University of Southern Maine 2-1.
Lilly Silva contributed on both of the Plymouth State goals, with a goal and an assist.
Kayla Vaughan scored the lone goal for the Huskies (2-5) on a feed from Sarah Metivier.
