BUCKFIELD – William Roger Lowell Jr., 85, of Buckfield, died Thursday, Sept. 29.

He was born in Buckfield on July 7, 1920, the son of the late William R. and Bernice M. (Staples) Lowell Sr., and was educated in Buckfield and Turner schools.

On July 4, 1942, he married Lena Heikkinen in Turner. They were married 55 years before her death in 1997.

He served in the U.S. Navy prior to the end of World War II.

He had been employed by the town of Buckfield doing highway maintenance, served as town constable in the town of Buckfield, worked for Bessey Foods for several years, at R.E. Lowell Lumber for many years, as a lumberman and as a foreman at Ellingwood Novelty Co., of Buckfield.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid reader.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 58 of Buckfield.

He is survived by his children, William III and his wife, Verletta, Ronald and his wife, Carol, James and his wife, Maggie, and Nancy Leavitt and her husband, Duane, all of Buckfield, and Cynthia Dennison and her husband, Cecil, of Lincolnville; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lena; brothers, Cedric and Leonard; and a sister, Rosamond Dodge.
