JAY – Ruth Howatt, 83, of Jay, formerly of Farmington, died Monday evening, Oct. 10, at her home in Jay, surrounded by family and friends after coping with cancer for a year.

She was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Rangeley, a daughter of William and Iris Fraser. She was a graduate of Rangeley High School and married Richard E. Howatt; he predeceased her on Aug. 14, 1992.

For many years, she was employed at J.J. Newberry and later Emery’s Fashions in downtown Farmington. She and her husband co-owned Westview Gardens in Farmington, near Federal Row. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, knitting and painting.

She is survived by one son, Rick Howatt and his wife, Theresa, of Jay; one daughter, Sandra Martin of Hereford, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Judy Massey of Tennessee; one sister, Beatrice Seales of Fort Myers, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Ricky Howatt, Jim Taylor and his wife, Amy, Kate Taylor, and Todd Howatt and his wife, Staci.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Ralph, Ken, Earl and Albert “Stub.”
