WASHINGTON – Olie Kolzig made 40 saves to get Washington into a shootout and then made two more stops in the tiebreaker to give the Capitals a 3-2 victory Sunday night over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Alexander Ovechkin and Petr Sykora scored during the shootout for Washington. Vincent Lecavalier, who scored his fourth goal of the season in regulation, was the only Lightning player to beat Kolzig in the extra session.

Kolzig turned aside Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards to seal the Capitals victory.

Lecavalier also added an assist, and Vaclav Prospal netted his fourth goal for the defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning. Chris Clark and Dainius Zubrus each scored for Washington with assists from Steve Eminger.

Wild 4, Mighty Ducks 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Manny Fernandez made 28 saves, and the Minnesota Wild’s power play clicked again in their 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Sunday.

Brian Rolston and Filip Kuba had power-play goals in the first period for the Wild, who entered with the top-ranked unit in the league. Minnesota has converted an impressive 36.4 percent of its opportunities.

The Wild didn’t waste any time getting going on Sunday.

A charging penalty to Corey Perry less than five minutes in gave them their first chance. Marc Chouinard’s shot from the point bounced off goaltender J.S. Giguere to Todd White, who slid the puck across the crease to Rolston. He scored to give the Wild a 1-0 lead just under six minutes in.

Kings 3, Blue Jackets 1

LOS ANGELES – Derek Armstrong and Mike Cammalleri scored power-play goals in the first period Sunday and led the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Playing in just his eighth NHL game, Los Angeles’ Jason LaBarbera made 20 saves to earn his third victory in three starts this season.

LaBarbera was just over 11 minutes away from his first shutout when Nikolai Zherdev scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-1.

The 25-year-old goalie was signed by the Kings as a free agent this summer. He has allowed just four goals in three starts while sharing the job with Mathieu Garon.
