WEST PARIS – In preparation for winter, selectmen have awarded a contract to R.A. Tibbetts of Wilton for screening and delivery of the town’s winter sand.
Town Manager Donald Woodbury said there were two bidders, Calvin Mason who bid $7.00 per cubic yard and Tibbetts at $6.65 per cubic yard.
The selectmen’s vote on Thursday was unanimous.
Before the vote, Road Commissioner Bill Keach was asked if he had received winter sand from Tibbetts before. Keach replied, “Yes, and I have always been satisfied with the quality of the sand he has delivered.”
Keach also stated that the bid price is an increase of $1.40 per cubic yard, compared to last year’s $5.25, “but the increase isn’t as much as I expected it might be.”
The order will be for 2,500 cubic yards screened and delivered for a total of $16,625. The sand will be delivered to the town garage where it will be mixed and stored.
Keach also has been authorized to purchase up to 650 tons of salt at $49.49 per ton. That figure is an increase from the $45.46 paid last year. He said he might not need that amount but the vote by the selectmen allows him to order what he needs as the winter progresses.
“I shouldn’t have any problem staying below the 650 tons, but you never know for sure until the winter is over,” Keach said.
Keach told the board that paving on Benson and Churchill Hill roads is expected to be done this week. That would complete the paving projects for this year. The paving will be done by Commercial Paving of Scarborough at a cost of $24,050.
