LEWISTON – An L-A Won’t Discriminate rally will be held at noon Thursday in Lewiston to show support for keeping a law that makes it illegal to discriminate in housing, credit and employment because of a person’s sexual orientation.

The Lewiston-Auburn branch of Maine Won’t Discriminate is holding the rally at Trinity Episcopal Church, 247 Bates St., “to emphasize the cruel reality of discrimination that many Mainers face,” the campaign said in a statement.

Maine Won’t Discriminate is opposing the Nov. 8 people’s veto that would overturn the law passed by state lawmakers. Those favoring the people’s veto, including Lewiston’s Paul Madore of Maine Grassroots Coalition, have said they want the law rejected because it will lead to gay marriage.

Those scheduled to speak at Thursday’s rally include the Rev. Jodi Cohey Hayashida of Auburn, and Rep. William Walcott, D-Lewiston. As the law was debated in the House last March, Walcott stood, announced he was gay, and spoke of the discrimination he experienced in college and in the workplace.
