LEWISTON – Bessie M. Liddle, 83, of 540 College St., Lewiston, formerly of New York, died Sunday, Nov. 6., at Montello Manor.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., July 15, 1922, the daughter of John A. and Leah (Lightholder) Hildebrand. She married Russell Liddle on July 11, 1942, and raised five children.

Prior to moving to Maine in 1998, she resided in New York where she had worked as a mental therapist at the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center. She also taught Sunday School at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Queen’s Village, N.Y. She was a den mother, a Girl Scout leader, and a member of the senior group of Pine Bush, N.Y.

Survivors include three sons, John E. and his wife, Catherine, of Horseheads, N.Y., Russell D. Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Rockport, Mass., and Mark E. and his wife, Sheryl, of Red Hook, N.Y.; two daughters, Shirley Ann Davison and her husband, Richard, of Edgecomb, and Mary Elizabeth Polchaninoff and her husband, Michael, of Newington, Conn. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Russell, who died in 2004.
