I object to the misleading headline on Page One of the Nov. 9 Sun Journal about Question 1, which implies that the area served by the Sun Journal overwhelmingly rejected the effort overturning the law giving special rights to our gay population.

Using the Sun Journal’s figures, the area served by the paper voted yes, to overturn the legislation. Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties all voted yes by margins that would be large in a national election: 52 percent, 55 percent and 53 percent. Lewiston and Auburn voted no by nearly 54 percent – a long way from the 57 percent implied on the front page.

If the Sun Journal wants to express opinions in its editorials, fine; but please try to be objective in the news reporting and fairly represent the subscriber base.

I will be interested to see how much the voting in Cumberland County again determined the vote in the state.

Philip Rea, Auburn

Editor’s note: Question 1 was a statewide ballot question. The headline and results in the story referred to voting from around the state and are accurate.
