PORTLAND – Kate Rigg will perform excerpts from her newest project, Birth of nASIAN, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Center for Cultural Exchange in Portland.
The performance wraps up her stay as an artist in residency at the center, an activity sponsored by the National Performance Network. The show will feature opener Say It Loud, a troupe of teenage girls who have been working under the instruction of local MC Sontiago for the last year.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door and may be purchased by calling the center’s box office between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at 761-1545, online at www.centerforculturalexchange.org, or at any Bull Moose music store.
Rigg takes on a wild series of characters, exploring identity and alienation across an Amerasian palette. The transitions between characters include an original trip hop soundtrack played live on electronic violin, live sampling, and beats, by Lyris Hung, as well as several in-your-face spoken word pieces that bring street sensibility to the issues facing Asian-Americans searching for their urban voice.
