LEWISTON – Amelia “Peggy” Vermette, 103, of Lewiston, passed away Thanksgiving Day, Nove. 24, at d’Youville Pavilion Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past seven years.

She was born on March 10, 1902, at Rovnak, Lithuania, the daughter of Vincent and Marcella Ashmer. When she was seven, her family immigrated to America, settling first in Massachusetts prior to moving to Lewiston. After her father’s death, when Amelia was still a child, her mother married Peter Adamen. Although Amelia loved education, and attended St. Joseph’s School, she ended her education early to go to work in order to financially help her family. Amelia was always very proud of how she was able to help her mother in caring for the younger children.

She moved to Michigan to find work. On May 24, 1941, she married Elmer Vermette and settled with him in the Pontiac area, where she worked in factories and as a very talented seamstress. On retirement, they moved back to Maine.

Several nieces and nephews survive her, as well as a special friend, Frank Steele, a volunteer at d’Youville Pavilion.

Her husband predeceased her in 1985. Michael Ashmer, Helen Schroeder, Joseph Ashmer, Ethel Ashmer, Anthony Adams, Stanley Adamen, Adeline O’Donnell and John Adamen also predeceased her.
