For millions of adults, stress can become a real pain in the mouth, often without them ever knowing it.
The reason: They’re clenching and grinding their teeth at night, which can lead to nerve irritation and make teeth sensitive to food and drink at extreme temperatures.
About 80 percent of adults grind their teeth when they’re under stress. This can lead to tension headaches, migraines and facial pain.
To relieve sensitivity and pain, Orajel has introduced a new over-the-counter product which works by sealing off the tooth channels that lead to the nerve. Orajel Advanced Tooth Desensitizer sells for about $12 at stores and through Web sites.
Other ways to treat the problem:
• Place warm or cold packs on the painful jaw muscles.
• Wear a night guard or a snoring guard while sleeping.
• Relax by getting a massage, meditating or taking a hot bath.
• Ask a dentist about a nociceptive trigeminal inhibition appliance, which is worn on the front teeth to prevent grinding.
