JAY – A Skowhegan man was listed in serious condition at a Lewiston hospital Monday after he lost control of his truck Sunday afternoon and slid into the path of an oncoming van.

Nine people were injured in the two-vehicle accident reported at about 5 p.m. Sunday on Jay Hill on Route 4, Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr. said Monday.

Daniel Clement, 58, of Skowhegan was traveling south on Jay Hill and lost control of his pickup truck due to slippery road conditions and veered into the northbound lane and was struck broadside by the van, White said.

The van was operated by Bernard Melancon 69, of Starks, who had seven passengers: Shirley Melancon, 56, of Starks; Nicholas Ennis, 18; Cameron Melancon, 3; Christopher Melancon, 4; Michael Melancon, 4; John Murphy, 16; and Grant Southerland, 15.

Clement, the sole occupant in the truck, wasn’t wearing a seat belt and complained of internal pain, White said.

Clement was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where a spokeswoman said Monday he was listed in serious condition.

The eight people, driver and passengers, in the van were properly restrained, White said. The chief also said he didn’t know where some of the van’s occupants live.

Bernard Melancon had facial injuries and was initially taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, White said. He was then transferred to Central Maine Medical Center, Franklin Memorial spokeswoman Jill Gray said Monday.

Melancon was treated and discharged from that hospital, a CMMC spokeswoman said Monday.

Shirley Melancon and Cameron Melancon had facial injuries, White said, and Christopher Melancon, Michael Melancon, John Murphy and Grant Southerland all complained of head injuries. They were treated and released from the Farmington hospital, Gray said.

Nicholas Ennis, also in the van, complained of facial injury, White said, but neither hospital listed him as a patient.

The 2002 Toyota truck was totaled and the 1988 Ford van had an estimated $3,000 in damage, he said.

Jay police officer Richard Caton IV handled the accident with assistance from Livermore Falls police and Jay firefighters.
