Rotary speaker

LEWISTON – Members of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club will learn more about Literacy Volunteers from Executive Director Tahlia Hope at noon Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Ramada Inn. Anyone wishing to attend to hear the speaker or to learn more about Rotary is welcome. The weekly buffet luncheons are $8/person.

OES meeting

LISBON FALLS – Pioneer Chapter 11, Order of the Eastern Star, will honor past matrons and past patrons on Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Lisbon Falls Masonic Hall. The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. potluck supper, with the meeting opening at 7.

Santa Claus will make his annual appearance with gifts for all good Eastern Star members. A special monetary collection benefiting Lisbon High School’s library will be taken instead of a gift exchange. All members of the order are invited.

Church services

AUBURN – The Danville Union Church will have services as follows:

Sunday, Dec. 18, the young people of the church will present a Christmas program followed by a coffee hour and time of fellowship.

Saturday, Dec. 24, a Christmas Eve candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. The young people of the church will present a special musical program as part of the service.

Sunday, Dec. 25, a Christmas night service will take place at 7 p.m. It will be a time with candlelight and reflection on the true meaning of Christmas.

Taize service

LEWISTON – The strains of Christmas music will fill the air as Trinity Episcopal Church prepares for the Nativity, the coming of the Christ child, at a 6 p.m. Taize service on Sunday, Dec. 18.

Patterned on worship services of the Taize community in France, the church will be darkened and still, lit mostly by candlelight. There will be a Scripture reading, simple meditative chants and prayers, all in a container of contemplative silence. The service lasts less than an hour. All are welcome.

Trinity Episcopal Church has, for many years, engaged with members of the L-A community in a ministry of hospitality, service and social justice, opening its doors to those in need. The church is the home of Trinity Jubilee Center, the heart of which is a meals program offering five meals weekly. Trinity also hosts several AA and NA meetings each week.

The weekly worship is at 9 a.m. Sundays at the church, located at 247 Bates St. For more information, call 782-5700 and ask for the Rev. Larney Otis or Regina Knox.

Bridge play

NEW GLOUCESTER – The New Gloucester Bridge Club met Dec. 11 at the Masonic Building where a two-table Howell game was played.

Finishing first were Bunny Banks and Les Buzzell; second, Darcy Page and Luke Merry. The annual Christmas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 18. Those attending are asked to bring something. A partner is guaranteed. For information, call Les Buzzell at 783-4153.
