• Some of the prominent Lewiston citizens are very much interested in the idea of providing the children suitable playgrounds and wholesome forms of amusements. It seems to be the opinion of all, that in the past too little attention has been given to this question.

The neon sign at the Androscoggin County sheriff’s department which for a long time flickered and fluttered on and off, now is completely dark on one side while on the other only one word and two letters of another will light.
The sign was hung by the main doorway to the sheriff’s office at the time Louis A. Gendron of Lewiston, a Democrat, held the high sheriff post.
It has remained there under the late Republican Sheriff J. A. Picard and is still there under Sheriff Hervey A. McGraw, also a Republican.
Now one side is completely in darkness, while on the other only the word “County” and the FF” of sheriff remain lighted.
Many feel that if the sheriff’s department is to be designated by such a sign it should be repaired and put into operation or be taken down and a different type sign be installed.

AUGUSTA – While the furor over adjustments to Maine’s returnable container law continues, Agriculture Commissioner Stewart Smith is questioning whether the state should be involved at all.
The latest bone of contention – a rule requiring store owners to do additional sorting of cans and bottles before returning them to distributors – came from Smith’s department.
The Legislature, responding to industry concerns about the effect of the new law, directed the Agriculture Department to figure out the most equitable method of implementing it.
