FRYEBURG – Clarence “Clem” George Allen Coombs, 79, of West Fryeburg, died Dec. 17, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.

Clem was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Fryeburg, the son of Percy William Leroy Coombs and Carolyn (Hill) Coombs. He graduated from Fryeburg Academy, Class of 1944. He served two years in the U.S. Navy and then graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1950.

Clem taught industrial arts for 37 years in various towns in Maine, including Belfast, South Paris, South Berwick for 13 years and Fryeburg Academy from 1966 to 1985.

He was a member of the Fryeburg Fish & Game, Interstate Snow-Goers, Kezar Lake Trail Blazers and Fryeburg Historical Society. His main interests were woodworking, hunting and fishing, and collecting antiques. For more than 30 years, he ran a shop with his wife, Fran, called Yard Sale by Coombs.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances (Talbot) Coombs of West Fryeburg; sons, Bryan of Holden, Mass., and Jack and his companion, Susan Fowler, of Fryeburg; daughters, Patricia Pond of Salisbury, N.H., and Michelle Coombs and her husband, Evan Thoms, of Anchorage, Alaska; brothers, Frank of Chula Vista, Calif., and Edward of Fryeburg; sister, Lemmie Travers of Moravia, N.Y.; grandsons, Sean Picotte and Graham Coombs, and their mother Caryn Stewart; and a granddaughter, Caroline Pond.
