LEWISTON – Emmeline “Emmy” Murphy, 89, of Penobscot Street, Rumford, died Monday, Dec. 19, at Central Maine Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born on May 19, 1916, in Rumford, a daughter of Harry and Fabiola (Duval) Hanson.

She was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School.

Emmy and and her sister, Teena, had been the owner/operators of Teena’s Restaurant for 50 years. Emmy, famous for Emmy’s Chicken Pie, was an active part of the business, continuing to work in the kitchen up until two seasons ago. She has never revealed the secret recipe for Emmy’s Chicken Pie outside of the family.

In her youth, she spent summers at the family camp in Oquossoc and was employed at hotels in the Rangeley area.

She was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church. She was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She loved spending time with her family and at her camp in Roxbury. She also loved heading out on numerous adventures with her sister and best friend, Teena, along the way dining out, critiquing the restaurant competition across the country. In her “off” time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, furniture upholstering, rug braiding and much more. One of her greatest joys, other than the birth of her own son, was his marriage and her grandson, Sean E. Murphy.

She held a special place in her heart for each of her many nieces and nephews. She was especially close to Teena’s children and grandchildren, more like a second mother/grandmother than aunt.

She is survived by her son, William P. Murphy and wife, Deborah, of Rumford; two sisters, Christine “Teena” Gorham of Rumford and Katherine Troberman of Texas; a brother, John Hanson and wife, Hazel, of Tacoma, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Sean Murphy, Jennifer Wentzell and Michael Wentzell.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Edward E. Murphy, in 1981; two brothers, Raymond and H. Edmond; and three sisters, Geraldine Ellrich, Irene Dullea and Eveline Rowe.

Emmy will live on forever in the hearts of us all.
