AUBURN – A Hampshire Street man will spend Christmas in jail after a six-hour standoff with police that ended early Friday.
David Taylor, 42, was arrested about 5 a.m. after Maine State Police tactical team officers fired chemical spray into his apartment, forcing him out of the building.
Police said Taylor had threatened to kill his girlfriend and then refused to cooperate with Auburn police officers who went to his home about 11 p.m.
Taylor was charged with criminal threatening, assault and violating bail. He was also charged with the civil violation of creating a police standoff, meaning he could ultimately be ordered to repay the cost of the police operation.
When Taylor refused to come out of his 118 Hampshire St. home, Auburn police called for help from the Maine State Police, which sent a team of their tactical officers. At the time, it was believed Taylor might have been armed, police said.
Neighbors on Hampshire Street and the surrounding area could hear negotiating – police used a bullhorn – to get Taylor from his home. Shortly after sunrise, there was a short explosion as police fired a round of chemical spray into the building, one neighbor said.
Nobody was hurt. Taylor eventually came out of his home and was arrested. On Friday night, he remained at the Androscoggin County Jail.
Because Taylor was free on bail from another charge at the time of the standoff, he was being held without bail Friday night. A jail official said Taylor would remain behind bars at least until early next week when he makes his first court appearance.
