PARIS – A Paris man arrested on New Year’s Day faces charges of criminal mischief and operating under the influence after police were tipped about his behavior, police said Tuesday.

Mearle Burnell, 57, was arrested after an incident at his home on Paris Hill, Sgt. Michael Dailey of the Paris Police Department said.

Dailey said Paris police were called to the home on New Year’s Day evening and told he had left and was believed to be carrying a gun.

Police checked the area and left but were called back soon on a tip that he was there and kicked in the front door and forced his way into a room.

When police confronted Burnell in the doorway of the home, he had one hand in his pocket and refused to show what was in his hand, Dailey said. The officers took him to the ground after he ignored their commands, he said.

Police saw a .357-caliber handgun in the entrance of the home in plain view after they took Burnell to the ground, Dailey said. Burnell is out on bail.
