AUBURN – Police say a diabetic reaction may have caused a woman to lose control of her car and slide into the oncoming lane Thursday night on Washington Street.

Cheryl Stain, 43, of Windham was driving south and drifted into the northbound lane, hitting a car, witnesses told police.

She was being evaluated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston late Thursday night. Her injuries were not considered life- threatening, police said. She was the only one hurt.

Driving north on Washington Street at about 7:20 p.m., Li Quin Chen, 43, of Gray, did not see Stain’s car coming at him in time to react. The two cars crashed near a small bridge south of Kittyhawk Avenue.

“She didn’t have her headlights on, according to a witness,” said Auburn police Officer Eric Bell. “She was already driving in the northbound lane. Mr. Chen was heading in the opposite direction and didn’t have much of a chance to stop in time.”

When police and paramedics reached Stain, she was having a diabetic reaction, police said. Investigators said they later found tire marks in the snow and a wooden post that had been struck by Stain’s Chevrolet.

Chen and the passengers in his car were not seriously hurt in the collision and did not require medical treatment. The crash remained under investigation Thursday night.
