OWLS HEAD – Kenneth C. Hutchinson, 76, died Dec. 31, 2005, following a brief fight with cancer.

He was born on April 21, 1929, in Canton, the first child of Gerald S. and Margaret S. Hutchinson, attended Canton public schools and graduated from Canton High School in 1947.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant, First Class, on Dec. 11, 1958 after serving active and reserve duty. He attended Bowdoin College and the University of Maine attaining a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education.

He married Janice I. Upton of Milbridge on June 29, 1957. They were married 48 years.

He began his distinguished career in education as a teacher at Rockland High School in 1957 and later moved to Buckfield High School as a teacher and principal. After two years at Buckfield he returned to Rockland High School where he spent the next 26 years teaching American history, government and was head of the History Department. Kenneth retired from RDHS in 1987 after a teaching career spanning 30 years.

He was an active member of the Maine Teachers Association, served on the legislative committee and was a member of the National Education Association. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, Whitney Lodge, 167, Canton, lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the American Legion and BPOE, Rockland Lodge.

He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman who enjoyed the lakes, streams and mountains of Maine. There are some very special places in Downeast and Western Maine where he, his family and his friends created a lifetime of memories. He was a devoted husband, a terrific father, a gentleman, a scholar, a dear friend; he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. We know as we visit those special places his spirit will be with us always. We will greet every “gorby” and seek their counsel, until it is time for us too to hear the owl call our name.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; brother, Conrad; sister, Patricia H. Jacobs; son, Laurence, Debra C. Hutchinson; daughter, Katherine H. Warren and husband, Robb Warren; grandchildren, Jennifer and Erica Hutchinson and Trey and Lily Warren; several nieces and nephews; and cousins, Jane Holstrom and Judy Bennett.
