There is excellent skating on Lake Auburn and you will see a large number of skaters on the ice. Near the ice houses where the ice company cleared the snow from crystal before getting in its annual supply there is an acre of ice as smooth as glass as a result of the recent cold snap.
Workingmen feel pleased over the fact that during the year 1906 no holidays occur on Sunday’s. New Year’s Day came on Monday, Washington’s Birthday will be on Thursday, Memorial Day on Wednesday, Independence Day on Wednesday and Labor Day on Monday. Other special days are St. Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, Hallowe’en on Wednesday, Thanksgiving on Thursday and Christmas on Tuesday.
50 Years Ago, 1956
A Stoneham man was arraigned in Municipal Court, on a seldom-invoked motor vehicle regulation as a result of his alleged contribution to a minor collision. Richard S. Jones was fined $5 and costs of $4.95 for attempting to pass another vehicle without sounding his horn, on complaint of State Trooper Stephen Conant of Norway. The other driver, Dayton R. Whitman of Norway was charged with making a left turn without giving a signal and was fined $5 and costs of $4.95.

Even with expensive air pollution systems, coal will continue to be a far cheaper fuel than oil during the next 20 years, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor advised Maine environmental officials. Carroll L. Wilson, who directed the World Coal Study, predicted the price of oil worldwide by the year 2000 will be two to four times the cost of burning coal cleanly, if current trends continue.
Eliminating front license plates, reducing subsidies to the state ferry service and leasing out the Maine State Pier in Portland are among the proposals a legislative panel claims would save the state more than $2 million next year.
