OQUOSSOC – Eugene E. Worthley, 83, of Oquossoc, died on Sunday Jan. 15, at his home.

He was born in Mexico, on Oct. 19, 1922, a son of Bryon and Rena (Fischer) Worthley. He graduated from Mexico High School in 1939. An avid football player, he liked to reminisce about winning the state championship semi-pro game against Waterville (14-6) in 1950. He worked 42 years at Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford, retiring in 1984 as a millwright. He joined the Marines in 1941 and spent his oversea time in the Gilbert Island, South Pacific on an anti-aircraft battery. His remaining time was spent at the USMC Naval Depot in Hawthorne, Nev., being discharged in 1945. He then moved to Little Rock, Ark., for a short time before returning to Mexico where he lived until after his retirement.

He married Dorothy Leighton in Dixfield, on April 22, 1944. She moved to Hawthorne to be with him during his tour of duty. While stationed there, their first child, Randy, was born. They also had two daughters, Diane and Debby. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Winslow and also belonged to the Rumford American Legion.

He and his family spent many vacations at his camp in Oquossoc and after his retirement he moved there full-time. He enjoyed many pastimes, including hunting, fishing, and will always be known as a great story teller and especially well-known for his penchant for hot wood fires. He and his wife made many enjoyable trips to Panama Canal to visit their daughter.

He enjoyed watching his favorite New York Yankees play.

He is survived by his children, Randy Worthley and his wife, Carol, of Winslow, Diane and her husband, Roger Haines of Las Vegas, Nev. and Debby and her husband, Mark Henson of Loveland, Colo.; six grandchildren, Lori Gerencer and husband, Tim, of North Yarmouth, Amy Meader and her husband, Lance, of Falmouth, Christopher Haines and his wife, Kim, of Leland, N.C., Tanya Kibler and her husband, Kyle, of Lincolnville; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Alex Gerencer, Kristian and Kavan Kibler and Wesley and Natalie Henson; a brother, Robert Worthley, of Mexico; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy on May 23, 1983; his older brother, Bryon; sister, Lillian; brother, George; twin sister, Arlene; and brother, Donald.
