FARMINGTON – Although rain and warm temperatures forced the closing of some slopes at Titcomb Mountain, the snowmaking done in December and early January has kept the three main slopes (Bunny, Main and Otter Slide) covered, said Karleen Andrews, manager.
The five inches of snow received Jan. 22 was packed on the primary trails, she said. Cold temperatures have returned and snowmaking scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights will help ensure coverage for weekend programs, races and recreational fun, she said.
The mountain will continue to open for skiing on Wednesday and Friday nights as conditions permit. The Maine Student Night will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays for $9. Call in advance to check conditions and operating hours.
The weekly children’s lessons are in progress and all programs are full, with more than 325 children participating in at least one program. The after-school programs include Alpine Snow Kids for grades kindergarten to three on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Nana Webber After-School Ski and Snowboard Program for grades three to six on Mondays and Wednesdays and the Bill Koch Nordic skiing program on Wednesdays.
The Saturday Ski and Snowboard School has sessions at 10 and 11:15 a.m. and Buddy Werner Introduction to Alpine Racing from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Private one-hour lessons for children and adults are also offered on the weekends. Ski and snowboard lessons are available on Saturday afternoons or all day on Sundays. Private snowboarding lessons are available for anyone 8 or older. Private lessons are offered at $20 for the first student and $5 for additional students with the same instructor.
A Learn to Ski/Ride Package is also available. Those interested are asked to call 24 hours in advance to reserve a private or package lesson.
At a recent meeting of the Farmington Ski Club, the board of directors voted to extend the season for an additional week if conditions permit.
