PITTSBURGH (AP) – Miroslav Satan notched his seventh career hat trick and added a shootout goal to help the New York Islanders defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4.
Satan, the first player in the shootout, made several moves on Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury before slipping a low backhander behind him. Trent Hunter, New York’s next shooter, also was successful on his backhand. Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro capped a 44-save performance by stopping Mark Recchi and Michel Ouellet in the shootout.
Satan scored all three of his regulation goals on the power play to continue a surge in which he has six goals in his past seven games after getting one in his previous 11.
New York improved to 6-4-1 under interim coach Brad Shaw and has won four of five to pull closer to the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Islanders (24-26-3) have 51 points, and the team in the eighth and final playoff spot entering Saturday was the Toronto Maple Leafs with 55.
Pittsburgh (12-32-11) is 1-13-2 in its past 16 games.
The Penguins rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the score at 3 on power-play goals by Tomas Surovy at 18:36 of the second period and Recchi at 5:26 of the third. Each came on the rebound of a point shot.
Chris Campoli put the Islanders in front again at 12:56 of the third after taking a long lateral pass from Jason Blake and wristing a shot past Fleury, who was slow to move across his crease.
But the Penguins’ Ric Jackman tied it again at 16:29 on a one-timer on the power play. His blast came seconds after he and Colby Armstrong dinged shots off the posts behind DiPietro.
Campoli’s goal was the only one in the game not scored on the power play.
Satan scored his first goal 1:37 into the game on a deflection.
Sidney Crosby, the Penguins’ star rookie, returned after missing a game to the flu and tied the score at 1 with a two-man advantage at 9:06. It was his team-best 26th goal.
Satan put the Islanders back ahead at 13:00 when he coasted untouched in the Pittsburgh slot and tucked a shot inside the far post.
He was even more open on his third goal 11:32 into the second period. He had time to look over the net from between the circles and nailed the top left corner for a 3-1 New York lead.
Satan beat the Penguins Jan. 26 by netting the lone shootout goal in a 4-3 victory in Uniondale, N.Y.
Notes: About 500 people attended a “Save our Pens” rally outside Mellon Arena two hours before faceoff.
