AUBURN – A man who police say drove his car into the back of a police cruiser and then sped away early Wednesday was arrested a short time later on Court Street.

Gary Reynolds, 26, of Lewiston was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a crash with injury and failure to stop for police.

Rookie police Officer Adam Martin was examined at a Lewiston hospital after his cruiser was struck on Main Street and after he chased down the suspect.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Kachnovich, who investigated the crash, said Martin had been stopped on Main Street at about 1:15 a.m. to check on a disabled vehicle parked in the area.

Kachnovich said a car that drove up behind Martin, a Plymouth sedan, crashed into the back of the cruiser, jostling Martin who was inside.

The driver then drove away from the scene, Kachnovich said. Martin followed in his cruiser until the driver of the Plymouth pulled over at Court and Pleasant streets. Reynolds was arrested by an Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputy and taken to the nearby Androscoggin County Jail. Martin was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was treated and released.

The extent of damage to the cruiser was not known on Wednesday. The wreck remained under investigation.
