LEWISTON – Meg Coffin scored 18 points and matched a career-high with 18 rebounds as Bates College clinched a home women’s basketball playoff game in the NESCAC tournament with an 83-41 victory over Amherst on Friday.

The Bobcats (16-7) opened up the second half with a 21-4 run.

Matia Kostakis added 14 points in the win, Val Beckwith scored 10, and Maggie Fitzgerald chipped in with 10.

Sarah Barton dished out eight assists.

Jenny Muller sparked the Lord Jeffs (9-13) with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Anne-Claire Roesch had six assists.

Bowdoin 60, Middlebury 48

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Eileen Flaherty scored 13 points and pulled down six boards as Bowdoin cruised past Middlebury 60-48 in women’s basketball Friday.

Marisa Berne and Jill Anelauskas each netted 12 points to pace the Polar Bears (19-2), and Justine Pouravelis chipped in with 10.

Katie Fisher had 10 points for Middlebury (14-9), and Alanna Young and Katie Fehsenfeld each scored seven points.

Williams 61, Colby 31

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass – Maggie Miler had 16 points to lead Williams College to a 61-31 victory over Colby College in a NESCAC matchup on Friday night.

Colleen Hession added 14 points and Patricia Ludwig had 10 for Williams (20-3).

Lauren Duval led Colby (8-14) with eight points and six rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Amherst 88, Bates 52

AMHERST, Mass. – Dan Wheeler poured in 21 points as Amherst handled visiting Bates an 88-52 defeat in men’s NESCAC basketball.

John Bedford added 16 points, including seven from the foul line, and Andrew Olson chipped in with 13 and five assists for the Lord Jeffs (21-2).

Bryan Wholey lead the Bobcats (19-4) with 13 points before fouling out. Zak Ray added 12 points, and Rob Stockwell had 10.

Bowdoin 58, Middlebury 56

BRUNSWICK – Kyle Petrie scored a game-high 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had five assists to lead Bowdoin to a narrow 58-56 victory over Middlebury in men’s basketball Friday.

Bowdoin had a 13-point lead at halftime and almost lost it. Kevin Bradley and Andrew Hippert also chipped in for Bowdoin (14-8) with 14 and 10 points.

Middlebury’s (12-11) Aaron Smith scored eight points and grabbed eight boards.

Colby 67, Williams 61

WATERVILLE – Colby had five players score in double digits as the Mules clinched a NESCAC playoff spot with a 67-61 victory over Williams in men’s basketball Friday.

Drew Cohen had 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks to pace Colby (9-13), while Nick Farrell added 15 points.

Mark Gaudet scored 12 points, and Mackenzie Simpson and Andrew Jenkins each netted 10 in the win.

Chris Rose led all scorers with 20 points for the Ephs (17-6) and chipped in with 14 rebounds and three assists. Chris Shalvoy had nine points, dished out 11 assists, and added five boards.

Men’s hockey

USM 7, Connecticut College 1

GORHAM – James LeBlanc recorded a hat trick and David Beckles stopped 22 shots between the pipes for the University of Southern Maine as the Huskies rolled over Connecticut College 7-1 in NESCAC hockey action.

LeBlanc also notched an assist in the victory, as the Huskies built up a 3-0 lead through the first two periods. Mark Carragher and Matt Mendoza each had a goal and an assist, and Neil Kelleher and Ryan Wright rounded out the scoring for USM. Tim Finkle notched the lone goal of the game for Connecticut College.

Colby 1, Wesleyan 0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior goaltender Ben Grandjean picked up his first shutout of the year with 36 saves to lead Colby to a 1-0 victory over Wesleyan.

Colby’s (14-7) Ryan Chrenek found the back of the net on assists from Josh Reber and Joel Covelli at the 17:17 mark of the first period for the lone goal of the game. Colby improves to 14-0-2 against Wesleyan.

Maine 3, Vermont 1

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Twelfth-ranked Maine scored three rapid goals in the third period to defeat No. 10 Vermont 3-1 on Friday.

Jeff Corey scored Vermont’s only goal of the game at 3:38 of the second period.

Maine was scoreless until 6:47 of the third period when Greg Moore netted a goal. He was followed in quick succession by teammates Rob Bellamy at 7:17 and Bret Tyler at 8:01.

Maine’s Ben Bishop made 18 saves. Vermont’s Joe Fallon had 20 saves.
