AUBURN – One man was shot in the leg and another was arrested Friday night during an incident on Washington Street.

Police who responded to 605 Washington St. about 7:45 p.m. found 34-year-old Richard McClain suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg. Police treated the wound at the scene before moving McClain to an ambulance.

Before he was taken to a Lewiston hospital, the McClain told police the man who shot him was still inside the house.

Police learned that 57-year-old Dario Jiambro was inside his home at 605 Washington St. with the handgun believed used in the shooting.

Police blocked off a section of Washington Street at Miami Avenue as police Lt. Eric Audette made contact with Jiambro and asked him to come outside.

Roughly 20 minutes after the shooting was reported, Jiambro was taken into custody and brought to the police station for questioning. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail.

Police remained at the residence hours after the shooting, looking for evidence and attempting to search the house where the suspect was found.

Deputy police Chief Phil Crowell and Lt. Jason Moen were supervising the crime scene as the investigation got under way. They were expecting to search the house after obtaining a warrant. The remaining occupants of the house cleared out as police prepared to search the grounds, the house and a garage.

Police were also speaking with a woman at the Bass Motel who was believed to be the person who initially helped the victim and then called police.

According to Crowell, McClain is friends with Jiambro’s son and the two men got into an argument at the house shortly before the shooting. It remained unclear whether McClain was shot inside a garage or outside.

His address was not immediately available.

“It appears there was a dispute over some property,” Crowell said.
