After scoring five times in the final period to beat Victoriaville Saturday, the Lewiston Maineiacs surrendered three goals in the final stanza in a 4-2 loss to Gatineau.
Lewiston had taken a 2-1 lead into the third period on goals by Stefano Giliati and Jonathan Paiement. Stefan Chaput assisted on both for the Maineiacs, which had a three-game winning streak snapped by the Olympiques. That lead didn’t hold as Gatineau scored twice in the first 5:56 of the final period.
Maxim Mallette, Darryl Smith and Claude Giroux each had a goal and an assist for Gatineau. Gatineau tied the game just 3:08 into the third on a Smith tally. Then at 5:56, Mallette put the Olympiques ahead with a power play goal. At 10:28, Matthew Pistilli made it 4-2 with his 14th of the year.
Gatineau used a power play goal from Giroux to take the 1-0 lead at 10:53. Lewiston got that score back at 15:14 on Giliati’s 12th goal of the year.
Brandon Roach and Chaput teamed up to feed Paiement for his 16th of the season at 13:11. Lewiston finished just 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
Lewiston gets a rematch with Gatineau at home Friday at 7 p.m.
