BANGOR (AP) – Police and school officials have launched an investigation into a student’s complaint that he was assaulted by the Bangor High School athletic director after Wednesday night’s basketball victory over rival Brewer.

Steve Vanidestine, who has served as athletic director for 22 years, was relieved of some of his duties and will not be involved in school athletic events pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police released few details, saying only that an 18-year-old alleged that he had been assaulted. Bangor High School senior David Brookings told the Bangor Daily News that he made the complaint following an incident in which he and a group of friends had come down to the court at Red Barry Gymnasium to congratulate the team on its win.

“What happened last night was not right, by any person,” said Brookings, who would not go into specifics about what happened.

Vanidestine declined comment on the incident.

Police and school officials were seeking witnesses who could offer details about what they saw.
