ORONO – Michel Leveille had three assists to lead Maine to a 5-3 win over Massachusetts in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday night.
Maine (24-10-2, 17-8-2 Hockey East) out-shot Massachusetts 18-4 and scored three goals in the first period.
Greg Moore tipped in a shot by Leveille 2:53 into the game on the power play to start the scoring and Rob Bellamy added another 28 seconds later.
The Black Bears took a 3-0 lead during a 5-on-3 situation when Billy Ryan converted on an across-the-goal pass from John Hopson.
Derek Damon put Maine up 4-0 early in the second period with his team’s third power-play goal of the night.
Massachusetts (13-19-2, 10-15-2) got two goals in the second. Chris Davis scored on a breakaway from Chris Capraro 5:48 into the period and Steven Werner rebounded a shot by Marvin Degon with 1:02 to play.
Josh Soares rounded out the scoring for Maine midway through the third. Topher Bevis added a late goal for the Minutemen.
Norwich 5, USM 3
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Five different players scored goals to give top-seeded Norwich University a come-from-behind victory over fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine in the first semifinal game of the ECAC East Championship Tournament on Saturday.
Jim Koehler netted the game-winning goal on assists from Jon Lachance and Nikita Kashirsky at the 13:33 mark of the third period.
Brian Mullally added a goal and an assist for Norwich (21-4-2).
USM took its only lead of the game at 4:21 of the third period when freshman Kyle Smith, a former Edward Little hockey player, found the back of the net unassisted on a power play.
Middlebury 3, Bowdoin 1
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Mickey Gilchrist scored a pair of goals and an assist to lift Middlebury to its third straight NESCAC Championship with a 3-1 victory over Bowdoin in men’s hockey action Saturday evening.
Neither team mustered up any shots early, but the Panthers (23-2-2) broke onto the board at 14:09 of the first period when John Sales gathered up a rebound and wristed a shot into the top left corner of the net. Gilchrist converted a nice feed from Jamie McKenna to make it 2-0 at 11:48 of the second period.
The Polar Bears (17-7-3) cut the lead in half just 34 seconds into the third period. Tim McVaugh took a pass from behind the net from Greg McConnell and made a tough angled shot on goal.
But Middlebury earned some breathing room with a power-play goal from Gilchrist with 1:30 left in regulation.
Women’s basketball
Stony Brook 84, Maine 70
ORONO – Leah Getz drained a team-high 19 points with six assists and five steals to power Stony Brook to a 84-70 win against University of Maine in women’s basketball Saturday.
Stony Brook’s (19-8) Dana Ferraro added 16 points and pulled down nine boards, while Jacobo Vasquez and Sidney Orndorff scored 13 apiece.
Ashley Underwood led all scorers with 24 points, including three 3-pointers and six assists for the Black Bears (9-18). The Black Bears were up by one at the half, but were outscored 51-36 in the second half.
Men’s basketball
Binghamton 71, Maine 62
VESTAL, N.Y. – Andre Heard scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Binghamton past Maine 71-62 in the quarterfinals of the America East Conference tournament Saturday.
Maine closed to within 44-43 with nine minutes to play before second-seeded Binghamton went on a 13-2 run punctuated by Heard’s dunk at the six-minute mark to put the game out of reach.
Ian Milne and Duane James scored 13 points apiece for the Bearcats (16-12), who hit 22 of 26 free throws. James grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Binghamton, which shot 39.6 percent from the floor.
Binghamton led by 11 points with eight minutes to play in the first half, but Maine’s Freddy Petkus completed a four-point play to pull the Black Bears within 23-21 with 2:18 to go before the Bearcats took a 25-21 lead into halftime.
Rashard Turner scored 19 points for seventh-seeded Maine (12-16). Ernest Turner added 15.
The host Bearcats advance to face Vermont in Sunday’s semifinal round.
Women’s Hockey
UNH 6, Maine 0
BOSTON – Jennifer Hitchcock had two goals and two assists to lead the University of New Hampshire to a 6-0 victory over Maine in a women’s Hockey East semifinals matchup Saturday.
Samamtha Faber also netted a pair of goals, while Jackie Webster had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats (31-2-1).
New Hampshire goalie Melissa Bourdon stopped all 21 shots she faced.
