FARMINGTON – Franklin County Sheriff Dennis Pike asked commissioners Tuesday to set a grievance hearing far enough forward so he can be in attendance.

Pike said he’ll undergo procedural surgery to address some circulation problems on Thursday, March 16, in Lewiston and would be able to attend a hearing in April after four weeks of recuperation.

Commissioners voted to schedule the grievance hearing for March 21 to comply with union contract language, which requires a hearing to be set within 30 days of receiving a grievance, with a caveat to ask the parties involved for an extension to Tuesday, April 18, so Pike could be present.

Pike said he wanted to be present since the grievance is against him and his actions.

Chief Deputy Raymond Meldrum said that union shop steward Steve Charles, a corporal with the patrol division, filed a grievance alleging violation of contract. Meldrum said Tuesday that Pike has denied the grievance, so now it goes to the commissioners for a decision.

In other business, commissioners voted to hire two full-time corrections officers to fill two vacant positions.

Those hired are Phillip Richards of Strong and Richard Cusson of Farmington.

Assistant Jail Administrator Carl Stinchfield told commissioners that corrections officer John Donald of Jay was promoted to supervisor Saturday after scoring the highest on tests to fill a vacant supervisory position.

Commissioners appointed James Carroll of Madrid to the Phillips, Madrid, Avon Micro Loan Committee, which assists small businesses.
