BRUNSWICK – Velma B. McGraves (Batchie), 91, died Tuesday, March 14, at Midcoast Senior Health Center.
She was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Edinburgh, to the late Herbert and Laura Batchelder. She attended Penobscot Valley High School and graduated from the Brunswick School of Nursing, an affiliate of Boston City Hospital. She married Donald E. McGraves on Jan. 15, 1942, in Brunswick.
Mrs. McGraves, R.N., worked at Maine Medical Center and Bath Memorial Hospital. In 1952, she and her husband built the Lisbon Falls Dairy Maid, which she operated until her retirement in 1987.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, Brunswick, where she baked for church suppers and created handicrafts for Christmas fairs. She enjoyed traveling and spending summers with family and friends in Georgetown.
She is survived by her sister, Lena Prescott of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two daughters, Janet McGraves of Brunswick, Jane Lloyd and her husband, Ken, of Cumberland; two grandchildren, J.D. Lloyd and Katie McGraves-Lloyd.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; son, Douglas; sisters, Dora Lyons, Martha Dow, Madeleine Smart, Lila Chaples; and brothers, Lawrence Batchelder and Henry Peter Batchelder.
