MARS HILL – Velma L. Allen, 87, of Caribou, died March 7, at Mars Hill, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Caribou, March 11, 1918, the daughter of Daniel and Dorothy (Shaw) Wark. She was married to Clayton Allen and they had two children, Donna and Billy.

She lived in Presque Isle for most of her life and was known by many as “Cook.” She worked as a cook in the Presque Isle school system lunch program, at the Opportunity Training Center and at a Mars Hill nursing home.

She had been taught by her mother, “There is no such word as can’t” and she lived by that principle all her life. She also passed along this advice to many people she met during her life. She was a very strong and determined lady who met her challenges head-on.

She is survived by her children, William Allen of Jay and Donna Thompson of Brunswick, Ga.; grandchildren, Michael, Susan, Jennifer, Cathy, Craig, Corey and Chad; and three great-grandchildren; a dear friend, Joan Anderson, who was always around to check on Velma’s well-being and to give her moral support through the years.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Charles and Richard Wark; and sisters, Ruth Gagnon and Rose LaBreck.
