WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) – Eight people were hospitalized Thursday after being exposed to a suspicious white powder at two convenience stores in Waterford and Groton.
Officials at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London said late Thursday that the victims were being treated for chemical burns and were expected to be released by the morning.
FBI authorities said they believe the powder at both locations was a strong cleaning chemical.
Both incidents happened at Cumberland Farms stores. In Waterford, authorities said two people were burned by the powder after one of them opened a newspaper.
Hazardous material teams responded to both stores. Route 32 in Waterford was shut down for several hours but has been reopened.
No arrests were announced. The FBI and local authorities were investigating.
