AUBURN – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will hold its fifth annual “Eat for Pete” event with several area restaurants on Wednesday, March 22.

Pete, like so many other animals that seek safety at the Humane Society, recently found himself homeless. His aimless search for a warm and secure place left him cowering on doorsteps and sifting through trashcan scraps for his supper. Last week Pete was found and brought to the shelter, where he was able to take a bath, eat some supper and have a warm, soft place to sleep.

By eating at a designated “Eat for Pete” restaurant, residents can help Pete and the other homeless, abused and abandoned animals, which make their way to the shelter each year.

The restaurants have pledged to donate 10 percent of their food sales to help the shelter care for animals.

The following area restaurants will participate in “Eat for Pete” with lunch between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Auburn, Dore’s Caf and Market on Union Street and Rolly’s Diner on Mill Street; Lewiston, Just Joan’s at Mr. Paperback on Lisbon Street.

The following will take part during dinner hours, 5 to 9 p.m.:

Lewiston – Davinci’s Eatery, Bates Mill; Governor’s Restaurant, Lisbon Street; Fast Breaks, Lisbon Street; Marco’s Restaurant, Mollison Way; and Subway, Main Street.

Auburn – Gipper’s Sports Grill, Center Street; Sam’s Italian Sandwich Shop, Center Street; Black Watch Restaurant and Pub, Court Street; Rolandeau’s Restaurant, Washington Street; Georgio’s Pizza and Donut Shop, Minot Avenue; and Subway on Center Street and Minot Avenue.

Turner – Youly’s Family Restaurant on Route 4 and Fore Seasons at the Turner Highlands Golf Course, North Parish Road.

The Humane Society provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals in the greater Androscoggin area a year. The primary support for the shelter comes from fundraising and donations.

The shelter is located at 3312 Hotel Road. Those interested in volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal should call 783-2311 or visit www.gahumane.org.
