BENTON – Oscar A. Mayo, 95, of Benton, died peacefully Thursday, March 16, at home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Milo, on June 11, 1910, the son of Oscar Mayo and Mary (Severance) Mayo Adams.

He shared 78 devoted years of marriage with his wife, Evelyn (Buzzell) Mayo, whom he married Oct. 26, 1927. They spent their many years together living in Wilton, Surry, Wells and Benton. He and Evelyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends in Eustis, hunting and fishing at the camp they built – Shangri La.

He was a member of Odd Fellows in Wilton for more than 60 years. He spent most of his working life in the Wilton Woolen Mill and working for the radio personality, Phillips H. Lord, in Surry.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; son, Averill β€œTed” Mayo and wife, Mary Ann, of Washburn; daughter, Janet Mayo Sylvester and husband, Harrison, of Winslow; grandchildren, Linda Mayo Thompson and husband, Bill, of Hampstead, N.H., Amber Mayo Meadows of New Hampshire, Brett Mayo and fiance, Diane, of Milton, N.H., Tammy Mayo Lavoie and husband, Mike, of Milton, N.H., Richard Sylvester and wife, Carol, of Kennebunk, and Deborah Bradstreet of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Emma Blaisdell of Norridgewock and Evelyn McElarth of Skowhegan; nine great-grandchildren, Shawn, Nicole, Jason, Ryan, Darren, Erica, Erin, Noah and Azure; and nine great-great-grandchildren. All his family brought great joy to him during his retirement years.

He was predeceased by four sisters; five brothers; and a grandson, Michael Sylvester.
