HEBRON – Hebron Academy Head of School John King has announced that students Mary Randall and Je Won Hong have been selected to the 2006 Maine All-State Orchestra. They will participate in the 53rd annual All-State Music Festival at the University of Maine-Orono campus on May 18 to 20.

Randall, daughter of Elizabeth and John Randall of New Gloucester, is a member of the freshman class and has played the cello since she first heard the instrument at age 4.

She auditioned for the all-state competition in November at the suggestion of her teacher and scored “extremely well as a freshman,” according to Forrest Perkins, chairman of the school’s Fine Arts Department.

A member of the Hebron orchestra and string trio, Randall has participated in the school’s theater productions, this year as a chorus singer in “The Wiz.”

Hong is a member of the junior class and is the son of Dong Shin Park and Chang Wan Hong of Korea. He began studying the violin at age 7. Hong came to the United States in 2003 as an exchange student in Ohio, and entered Hebron as a sophomore.

He is a member of the school orchestra and the football team, co-captain of the junior varsity basketball team and plays baseball. He has acted in school musicals, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “The Wiz,” and maintains a full academic schedule with three advance placement courses.

More than 80 students from around the state will participate in the orchestra, selected from auditions held in the fall. The All-State Music Festival is an annual collaborative program sponsored by the University of Maine, UMaine School of Performing Arts and the Maine Music Educators Association. The three-day event ends with two major public concerts at the Maine Center for the Arts on the Orono campus.
