On Friday February 17th, St. Dom’s held their annual semi-formal dance. The theme of the dance was “Sunset on the Nile.” As writers of the academic advocate we thought it would be neat to do a girls and guys perspective of the whole evening. From mishaps to laughs and everything in between, we had quite an evening. Enjoy! ?
Danielle’s Perspective
Its 1:30 on a Friday afternoon and my girls and I are headed off to Taboo to get our hair done for our last semi-formal at St. Dom’s. Everything this day seemed to be going wrong! I woke up sick, the hair dresser was running late, it was raining and the wind was blowing so hard. I just wanted everything to be perfect, and I had little faith that things would turn around. Now, I was excited to see what my hair dresser had in store for me as I sat down in the chair. She went to work on it and three and half hours later my friends and I were finally done and ready to move on to the next chaotic part of the evening…makeup, boutonnière pick-up, putting the dress on, and of course supper!
It seemed as though all kinds of little things were adding up, I felt like I was going to forget something really important. On our way home we stopped at Blais flower shop to pick up our boutonnières for our dates. When we walked inside we realized there was no power there. We didn’t really think twice of it and hurried up so that we could go back to my house to finish everything up. Seeing that the flower shop is in my neighborhood, it was just my luck that my house didn’t have power either. So, we had to have some slight change of plans.
My friend Shannon and I had to busily shave our legs in the kitchen sink, the only area with light, we had to trust each other for makeup application, and we had to manage finding every last piece of jewelry with a flashlight. As time progressed we noticed how late we were, not only was our dates already waiting upstairs, we had to push back our supper reservation so that we would have more time to finish getting ready! After all, we did want to look perfect, its senior year! So we finally finished and made it out the door to head over to another house for more pictures.
We tried to spend as little time as possible there so that we could make it to dinner in the remaining ten minutes that we had. Supper was probably the only relaxing time of the night! We got to catch up with everyone and eat (something I hadn’t been able to do all day!) As supper ended Nick and I headed over to the Ramada and the fun began!
The coronation of the King, Joe Vining, and Queen, Michela Fyler, was a pleasant surprise! Everyone was so enthusiastic and thrilled with the outcome of all their votes. The night progressed and we danced and took a ton of crazy pictures. As a usual tradition, Nick and I did our ballroom dancing through all the other couples. It’s always a blast to dance with Nick because it’s always new and exciting! Not to mention, I never stop laughing!
The night seemed to go by extremely fast and before I knew it I had to leave a little early to head down to the airport to pick up my boyfriend. My friends and I said our goodbyes and I couldn’t help but think that this was the last semi I would be at! All and all throughout all the mishaps and “bloopers” of my semi night, I had a wonderful time with my friends dancing, and creating more memories that I’ll never forget.
Nick’s Perspective
Hi, my name is Nick Hixon and I’m a senior at St. Dom’s. Over the past four years I’ve been able to go to mostly all of my school’s events like hockey games, basketball and soccer and of course all of my cross country meets, but I’ve always loved going to my school’s dances, especially our annual Semi-Formals. My friend Danielle Cyr is also a writer for Academic Advocate, so we thought that it would be fun if we went together and told our side of the story of that interesting night. Here it goes……
Every year when we have semi, we always get out early so that everyone can get ready for the big night, like Student Senate and of course the rest of the student body. So of course everyone is excited to leave. I get home and I….watch TV knowing that I’ll have plenty of time because it only takes me about 45 minutes to get ready, take a shower, shave, shine my shoes, you know…the usual. So Danielle tells me to get to her house around 4:45 and we’ll swing over to a friend’s house and take some pictures then head over to our reservations at Mac’s Grill for 5:00. Well to throw a little chaos into our schedule, when I get into Lewiston I find out that they lost power! So instead of leaving around 4:45 we didn’t leave until about 5:30, but luckily we got our reservations bumped up to 6:00 (this is really where my messed up night began, when I spilled steak sauce on my suit pants, oh boy!) After dinner we headed over to the Ramada where our semi was being held and we walked in, right in the middle of the Court walk. The theme this year was “Sunset on the Nile” . It all looked so nice…anyway, they announced Court King and Queen and then the real party started!!!
Music’s blaring, people are dancing, everyone is having a good time, there were dance-offs, great beverages and even a V.I.P. room, but before we knew it the night was over so we thought well what to do now? Actually I was thinking what am I going to do now? Danielle and our friend Heather left semi early to go down to Portland and pick up Danielle’s boyfriend from the airport, he was coming home from Georgia. So by 10:15ish I was officially…dateless…(no, no, don’t cry for me) some of my other friends all decided to go to Denny’s around 11:00 or so, so I decided to go. I said my goodbye’s to everyone and headed out.
Well on my way to Denny’s I noticed I was low on gas so I pulled up to a gas station getting ready to pump the gas and it wasn’t working (the lady in the store must have thought that I didn’t know how to pump gas or something because I tried every pump there). So I was seriously thinking what else could go wrong tonight, and of course something else certainly happened since Lewiston had lost power. That meant my bank was down so my visa got declined (oh yes! ha! ha! ha! nervous laugh) so now what to do? I didn’t even know if I had enough gas to get home and ,oh yeah, I live in Minot! So luckily I made it home and from all this tension that has formed in my back and neck from all of that night’s events I decided to just go to bed!
So in conclusion to my “wonderful” evening’s story it’s something I know I’ll look back on, in a few years and laugh so I guess that will make for a great memory of high school, while I’m away at college.
