LISBON – Selectmen will meet April 4 to consider terminating the town’s contract with Earth Tech, which operates the town-owned sewage treatment plant.

The change recommended by Town Engineer Ryan Leighton is one of economics and would save money to offset sewer rate increases. A number of years ago, the town decided it would be economically feasible to put the job of managing the plant out to the private sector, but Leighton now believes the town could save money by operating its own plant.

Earth Tech is currently in the second year of a three-year contract that costs the town $750,000 annually, Town Manager Curtis Lunt said. This is the third consecutive contract the town has had with Earth Tech.

In other business, selectmen appointed Community Development Director Dan Feeney, Ryan Leighton, Selectman Layne Curtis, and local businessmen Mike Oberlarlander, Carl Huston Sr., and Larry Stewart to a new Transportation Systems Management Study Committee, whose members will spend the next six to eight months re-evaluating long-range plans to improve the flow of traffic on Route 196.

The last major studies on the traffic problems and possible solutions was conducted in the late 1980s, Lunt said. The study will include looking at adding traffic lights and lanes.
