STOW – Gwendolyn (Gwen) Sadie Tarbell, 72, of Stow Road, Stow, died unexpectedly March 29, at her home.

She was born in Bridgton, on April 13, 1933, the daughter of Anson and Frances (Thompson) Allen. She grew up in Harrison and was educated in Bridgton schools. She lived in Old Town for a short time and had lived in Stow since 1960. She worked at the old Corn Shop, Northland Shoe, Log House Designs, kept the books for the family farm, and wrote a column for more than 20 years for the Advertiser Democrat and the Reporter Press.

She was a longtime member of the Stow Baptist Church where she was treasurer and church clerk. She was a 50-year member of the Merry Makers Christmas Club and a founder of the Stow Ladies’ Biking and Hiking Society. She was also a member of the Red Hat Ladies of the Lakes Luncheon Group. She was known as Ma Gunn’ in the Single Action Shooting Society, where she won several awards. She also worked for the Fryeburg Fair in the Old School House.

Surviving family includes two daughters, Polly Bartow and husband, Kenneth, of Otisfield and Susan T. Smith and husband, James, of Stow; one sister, Polly Hunter of Madawaska; three grandchildren, Jonathan and Adam Bartow and Christopher Higgins; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Benjamin Bartow.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roger C. Tarbell in 2004.
