LEWISTON – The Lewiston Recreation and Parks Department has announced that registration for an eight-week ballroom dancing series is under way. The program will run from April 12 to May 31 at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.

“No partner and no previous experience are necessary,” said Recreation Coordinator Jeanne Strout, “and we look forward to participants of all ages learning beginner ballroom, beginner Latin, specialty Latin, and intermediate ballroom and Latin.”

The sessions will be taught by Barbara Charles under the direction of Polina Kirillova and Sergei Slussky, ballroom dance instructors of the American Ballroom Dance Academy in Portland. Kirillova and Slussky have taught and competed throughout the United States and in their native Russia.

Beginner ballroom will consist of the waltz, fox trot, swing and night club, and the class will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Beginner Latin will consist of salsa, merengue, mambo and night club, and the class will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Specialty Latin will consist of the tango, samba, rumba and the hustle, and the class will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

The classes are $56 each for residents and $66 for non-residents. Any two of the above may be taken at a cost of $84 for residents and $94 for non-residents. In addition, intermediate ballroom and Latin will consist of the waltz, fox trot, swing, salsa, merengue, mambo and night club and will be held from 8 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays.

Interested individuals may register between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through April 10 at the Recreation and Parks Department Office, Lewiston Memorial Armory, 65 Central Ave. At least 12 participants are necessary for a class to be held.
