FARMINGTON – Town Manager Richard Davis announced Tuesday that volunteers raised $12,000 of the money required to build a recreational bridge over the Sandy River, connecting two sides of a former rail line that is now being used as a recreational trail.
Called the “Rail and Trail Project,” Davis said once built the bridge will connect the trail to one that runs all the way into Jay. “It’s a nice trail – very scenic – and a lot of people are using it now.” When the bridge is done, people will be able to “ride up to Farmington (from Jay) to have dinner and a movie” in their snowmobiles or on their bikes, Davis said.
Now that the $12,000 has been raised, the engineering phase of the project can begin, Davis said. Engineering is expected to cost $48,000, and will be paid for by the Maine Department of Transportation.
The bridge itself will cost nearly $600,000, and Davis said fundraising will begin soon to raise the 20 percent required match.
