TORONTO – Lyle Overbay hit a grand slam and Reed Johnson tied a career-high with four hits and made a sprawling catch near the left-field foul line to prevent the tying run from scoring Wednesday night in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 9-7 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Overbay homered off Joe Blanton (3-4) as Toronto took a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but Oakland came back and led 7-6 in the fourth following home runs by Adam Melhuse, Mark Kotsay and Frank Thomas.

Johnson doubled in the bottom half, and Toronto went ahead for good on Adam Melhuse’s run-scoring passed ball and Frank Catalanotto’s sacrifice fly.

Angels 12, White Sox 5

CHICAGO – Garret Anderson hit a three-run double, Juan Rivera drove in three runs and the Los Angeles Angels scored a season high in runs, beating the Chicago White Sox 12-5 Wednesday night.

The Angels led 6-5 before exploding for a season-high six runs in the top of the ninth off four White Sox relievers.

Devil Rays 1, Mariners 0

SEATTLE – Scott Kazmir allowed only three singles – two of them infield hits – and struck out nine over seven innings as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0 Wednesday on a run-scoring balk by Jamie Moyer.

Kazmir (5-2) has allowed two runs or fewer in six of his eight starts this season, winning games started by Roy Halladay, Curt Schilling and Tim Wakefield. His first five outs were strikeouts, and he retired 16 in a row between Willie Bloomquist’s second-inning single and Adrian Beltre’s two-out walk in the seventh.

Royals 10, Indians 8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Aaron Guiel and Angel Berroa hit solo home runs in the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 10-8 Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

Every Royals starter had at least one RBI. Guiel connected for his second homer in two games, hitting a tiebreaking shot after the Indians scored three times in the eighth to tie it at 8.

Tigers 6, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE – Rookie Justin Verlander took a five-hitter into the seventh inning, Brandon Inge and Curtis Granderson hit successive homers in a four-run seventh, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 Wednesday night to end a three-game skid.

Magglio Ordonez went 2-for-4 with a single and a double for the Tigers, but his streak of hitting a homer in consecutive games ended at four. The last Detroit player to homer in five consecutive games was Willie Horton in 1969.

Twins 4, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas – Vicente Padilla forced in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning when he walked two batters and hit two others, helping the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

With the score 1-1, Padilla (3-3) walked Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer opening the seventh, then hit Justin Morneau and Mike Redmond with pitches. Joaquin Benoit relieved and got Tony Batista to ground into a double play as Cuddyer scored for a 3-1 lead.

National League

Marlins 11, Braves 3

MIAMI – Rookie Josh Johnson allowed only one unearned run in six innings, and the Florida Marlins totaled 17 hits to end their streak of 11 consecutive home losses by beating the Atlanta Braves 11-3 Wednesday night. Miguel Cabrera led the Marlins’ offense by going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored. Joe Borchard homered and had a career-high four RBIs, and Mike Jacobs also homered for Florida.

D-backs 7, Pirates 4

PITTSBURGH – Brandon Webb withstood a shaky start to win his sixth in a row, Chad Tracy had four hits and Shawn Green drove in three runs to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 7-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.

Webb gave up three runs and 10 hits despite constantly being in trouble over six innings, but worked out of enough jams to improve to 6-0 in eight starts. He has the most victories of any unbeaten pitcher in the majors, never allowing more than three runs in any start during his streak.

Mets 13, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA – Tom Glavine pitched seven strong innings and drove in a pair of runs to help the New York Mets beat Philadelphia 13-4 Wednesday night, snapping the Phillies’ nine-game winning streak.

The Mets pounded Phillies starter Cory Lidle (3-4) early, with eight players getting hits and all nine scoring while building a 10-0 lead through three innings.

Reds 9, Nationals 6

CINCINNATI – Scott Hatteberg hit a bases-loaded, two-run double in the eighth inning to lift the Cincinnati Reds over the Washington Nationals 9-6 Wednesday night.

Adam Dunn led off the eighth against Mike Stanton (1-4) with a walk and moved to third on Austin Kearns’ double. Chris Denorfia was intentionally walked and Hatteberg doubled over the head of center fielder Marlon Byrd. Brandon Phillips followed with a sacrifice fly.

Cardinals 7, Rockies 4

ST. LOUIS – Albert Pujols hit his major league-leading 18th homer and Jeff Suppan won his fourth straight start, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Colorado Rockies 7-4 Wednesday.

Juan Encarnacion also homered for the Cardinals, who took two of three from the NL West leaders and have won five of six overall.
