LEWISTON – An Auburn teen was racing another car when his car crashed into a pole on Canal Street last month, killing a friend in the passenger seat, police said.

Since the April 5 crash that killed 18-year-old Kenny Jellison, police said they had been told by witnesses that 17-year-old Kyle Karkos had been driving at a high speed.

Police this week said that suspicion was confirmed when Karkos admitted he was racing and lost control of his car and it crashed at Canal and Lisbon streets.

One woman told police at the scene of the crash that Karkos’ Honda Civic had passed her at high speed on Canal Street moments before the car slid into the pole. Jellison was killed instantly, police said.

Karkos and Jellison were both students at Edward Little High School. No charges have been filed. Police said the crash report has been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
