Wilton – High-tension wires kept a man trapped in his vehicle after he crashed it into a utility pole Thursday morning on Route 2 in Wilton.
Douglas Heinmuller, 63, of Vermont, was traveling alone eastbound on Route 2 shortly after 8 a.m. when his 1994 Ford pickup left the roadway, crossed a ditch and struck the utility pole, shearing it off, police Chief Wayne Gallant said.
The truck traveled another 100 feet before hitting banking and launching across another ditch. It came to rest in the driveway of the Wilton Fish and Game shooting range.
Because of the high-power wires around the truck, Heinmuller had to wait until Central Maine Power Co. could get to the scene to shut down power. Gallant said that process took less than 20 minutes.
The eastbound lane of Route 2 was closed for a short period of time as police dealt with the accident.
Gallant said Heinmuller was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital after complaining of possible back pain and a swollen leg, but the injuries did not appear to be serious. Heinmuller was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by an ambulance.
Officer Anthony Duvall, who responded to the accident, said Heinmuller apparently lost control of his vehicle because of a medical condition that caused him to lose consciousness.
The vehicle was a total loss.
