HONG KONG (AP) – Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn paid $10.1 million Tuesday for a Chinese vase from the Ming dynasty, the highest price ever paid for porcelain from that period.

The pear-shaped vase is decorated with a peony scroll, auction house Christie’s said in a statement. It has been sold three times previously, with its most recent sale in Hong Kong in 1997 fetching $2.8 million.

The Ming dynasty lasted from 1368 to 1644.

The previous auction record for a Ming porcelain was set by a jar from the period, which sold for $5.7 million in 2000.

Wynn, chief executive of Wynn Resorts Ltd., is opening a casino resort in the southern Chinese territory of Macau, near Hong Kong, in September.
