FRYEBURG – Fryeburg Fish and Games Association Inc. President Jim Holt announced at a recent meeting that three young people will be given scholarships to the Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond. They are Justin Gould, Peter J. Holt and Seanna Miller.

While at the conservation school, they will be exposed to paddling, swimming, hiking and a hands-on woodcraft skills experience. They will also participate in the traditional camp activities that include singing, story telling, crafts and skits structured to help them develop a conservation ethic.

Holt advised that he has been in touch with firms that will donate their heavy equipment to move earth at the state range and, as soon as arrangements can be made, work will begin on reconstruction of the backstops and improvement of the berms between the ranges.

Additional firing points on the rifle range will be installed and the down range surfaces will be smoothed out. No schedule has been decided, but when known, the range will be closed while work is done.

Tait will be available to teach the two-day advanced personal protection course. Completion of the basic course is a requirement for enrollment in the advanced course. For more information, contact Holt at 935-2625.

The association voted for the establishment of a junior rifle program and the formation of a junior rifle club for young people from age 12 to 18. Club members will learn safe firearm handling. The National Rifle Associations basic course will be taught by certified rifle instructor Bob Wallstrom of Brownfield.

Wallstrom began rifle shooting at age 14 and went on to be a master class high power and small bore rifle shooter, winning national rifle medals. He was also coach for several years of the Connecticut National Guard rifle team.

There will be no live firing until all students have completed basic studies. Outdoor firing will be done at the state range in Fryeburg. For more information about the junior rifle program, contact Wallstrom at 935-4655.
