LISBON FALLS – Chief Worumbo’s eighth annual Androscoggin Fun River Race, “Get the Native Spirit,” will take place on Sunday, July 9, as part of Lisbon’s annual Moxie Festival.
Registration forms may be downloaded at moxiefestival.com or picked up at Faye’s Barbershop. For more information, call Faye at 353-2728.
The race is dedicated to the spirit of the Native Americans on the Androscoggin River and its shores.
The theme this year also celebrates Moxie, the official soft drink of Maine. The origin of the word moxie is believed to have been derived from the Native Americans, and its meaning is “strong medicine” or “dark waters.”
The six-mile course, mostly flat, will possibly include easy class two rapids, depending on water level.
There will be 10 categories. All extra light weight canoes designed for racing, war canoes and doubles kayaks must register under the “Weekend Warriors” category. Other categories are male and female kayak, solo F canoe, solo M canoe, tandem males, tandem females, tandem mixed, +100 (ages of paddlers in the boat must total +100 years) and family (parents or guardians and their children under the age of 18).
There will be three prizes awarded in each category. Race time start will be 11 a.m. Registration fee is $12 a person, which includes picnic lunch and beverages at race end for all registrants. Race T-shirts will only go to those who preregister before Wednesday, July 5.
Race day registration will start at 9 a.m. All paddlers must wear an approved PFD. The race will start at the Durham Boat Launch on Route 136.
Take-out and race finish will be on Route 196 in Lisbon Center at the Sabattus River Boat Park. Shuttle service will be available after the awards ceremony. Awards will be presented as soon as the last paddler crosses the finish line.
A picnic lunch will be provided only to the paddlers, but there are several sandwich shops and ice cream stands less than a mile from the race finish for other family members.
